Installing License Manager

Before you install License Manager, check that you meet or exceed the following software and hardware requirements.

SQL Server requirements

Software

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2019 or later
  • x86 or x64 supported

Hardware

  • Physical or virtual server
  • A specification suitable for running SQL Server 2019 or later. (See Microsoft best practice guides)
  • Database size depends on the number of devices to be imported
    • No more than 400 MB with no device data
    • Approximately 250 MB of device data per 1,000 devices for .EXE file data.
    • Approximately 120MB of device data per 1,000 devices for MSI data
    • Approximately 100 MB of device data per 1,000 devices for metering data.
  • 16GB RAM Minimum
  • Multi-core CPU recommended

Note: Running SQL Server on virtual infrastructure can negatively impact performance when using general purpose SAN/NAS storage. Storage should be optimised for SQL Server with high IOPS and throughput with low latency, fast SSDs are highly recommended.

Client requirements

Software

  • Microsoft .NET Framework v4.6.1 or later
  • Supported Operating Systems:
    • Windows 10
    • Windows Server 2012
    • Windows Server 2012 R2
    • Windows Server 2016
    • Windows Server 2019
    • x86 and x64 supported

Hardware

  • Physical or virtual
  • 1920 x 1080 or higher recommended screen resolution
  • Less than 70MB of disk space is used by the client application
  • 8GB RAM minimum
  • Multi-core CPU recommended

Note: An active Internet connection is required from the License Manager application to the License Dashboard licensing service hosted at https://e.licensedashboard.com. When activating a license key, the License Manager Windows application will contact the licensing service to determine the enabled features. Some import and export features of License Manager may be restricted if an Internet connection is not available.

Beginning the Installation

Note: If you are upgrading to a new version of License Manager please backup your current database before beginning the installation. See also: Backing Up a Local Database.

When you purchase License Manager, your reseller will provide you with a license key. You will also be provided with a web link to a .ZIP archive file. This file contains the License Manager application.

Download the .ZIP archive, then extract the contents to a suitable location.

Open the License Manager Installer v5.x folder. Then double-click the LicenseManagerSetup.msi file to begin the installation. If you experience any problems with the installation, please refer to the License Manager 5.x Installation Guide. A PDF copy is included in the .ZIP archive.

Once the License Manager installation has finished, there are three important steps that must be completed. When you open License Manager for the first time, it will automatically take you through the first two steps.

  1. Connect to the SQL Server
  2. Configure your license with the Update License Task
  3. Add a Dictionary

To begin, open License Manager from the Windows Start menu.
